Alternative Activities Besides Golf
The key to having a successful golf trip is the ability to enjoy yourself even if you can not do what you came to do. If for some reason the weather has prevented you from getting out on the golf courses, you should always have a backup plan. In almost any area, even those known mainly for golf, there are many other activities for a tourist who has had their right to golf denied.
Many of the areas that are essentially built around golf can be slightly harder to find entertainment in. While your resort will offer you a list of local “attractions” and “museums”, it has been my experience that these are almost laughably uninteresting and not worth the effort to go to. Usually you will find it is just some creepy old man with an abnormally large collection of some worthless object. So although this local entertainment may sound tempting to go visit, usually it’s a better idea to have alternative activities. If you are stranded in a town devoted to golf, your options might be rather slim. You can stick with simple board games and books until the rain clears up, or you can just pack up your bags and go home depending on how far away you are.
This is why I generally try to stay away from the areas that are completely based on golf. Other places might not have such a focus, but this is nothing but beneficial. The courses have no less quality than others, while the areas provide many more attractions should the worst happen as far as weather goes. For these more varied areas, you can do a quick search online for a list of the best historical attractions, restaurants, natural features, and any other amazing things to keep you busy.
Whether it is historic sites, shopping, museums, or restaurants, you should always have a practical list of things to do. While you might not ever need to consult the list, its best to have it there so that you don’t end up sitting in a hotel room with your companions, bored out of your mind. It can also be a good idea to visit some of these attractions or activities even if the weather isn’t bad. Having a few varied activities thrown in with a bunch of great golf games can keep your trip seeming balanced and fun. It can also keep the golf form getting tiresome or old by giving you other things to think about every once in a while.
